Han, the Chameleon | “can’t love” by can’t be blue (Feat. Stray Kids’ Han)
He has such a range that he can suit pretty much any genre. He could probably do opera or mariachi and fit them perfectly.
I’m loving how much Han music we’ve gotten this year. Writing SKZ-Records. Cowriting “Star, Light.” An OST. A SKZ-Player. And now his first featuring. And that’s all on top of with his work with 3RACHA/Stray Kids on MODYSSEY’s “HOOK,” “Endless Sun,” and everything for This & That. And it’s only August! We have four and a half more months! He’s definitely kept his promise to show us lots of his music this year. And I love it.
And “can’t love” is a milestone as it’s his first solo feature on another artist’s song. And not only is he credited as a vocalist, he is also credited as a composer and lyricist. It’s not clear how much input he had on the lyrics and music, but it’s enough to be credited. So, let’s take a look at the lyrics.
Couple disclaimers: I don’t speak Korean. I am using my limited SKZ knowledge and the English translations from Genius. These are my own thoughts based on those translations and not meant to be a definitive interpretation.

In case you were unfamiliar – as I was – with can’t be blue, they are a five member indie band that debuted in 2024. The lead singer, Dohun, did some solo stuff before, and a couple other members participated in a Korean-Japanese survival show in 2022. Since their debut, they’ve released a couple EPs, several singles, and their first album, which “can’t love” is included in. They also had a song featured on the OST for the drama “KickKickKickKick.”
Han made it very clear how excited he was for this collab. On a FANS live the day the song dropped, he said that he worked on the song early this year and was anxious for it to come out and finally be shared. And in the M/V making video, he said that many of his playlists have had can’t be blue songs on them, and he was very excited to work with them for this project. He said, specifically, that featuring on a song by an artist he loves feels like it will be “a driving force that helps [him] keep doing music longer.”
The song itself is simple yet powerful. It’s very catchy. And the lyrics show a very interesting internal battle of not wanting to fall in love but wanting to love. It’s sort of ambiguous at first. In some places, it feels more like…a playboy or someone who doesn’t want to commit and is deflecting her advances. And in others it seems that he’s avoiding opening up because of fear.
The line “I can’t love you as you” is the most often used line that feels like this for me. And Han’s whole verse has that feeling too. But especially these lines:
Verse 2:
I assumed feelings are only temporary, that’s how I am Whenever your words about sincerity are in front of me, my feelings fade away
Don’t tell me that doesn’t sound cold at first. But thinking about it just a moment more, you can read other interpretations into it. And then we get to the last line of the bridge and the last chorus:
Bridge:
Oh, girl, don’t make me love you
Chorus:
Girl, I just wanna love you I should make you smile like you do so Leave me like the way you went through The words “I love you” just won’t come out no matter what, when I look at you Girl, I can’t love you as you
And this is where it all makes a bit more sense. He wants to love her. He wants to make her smile.
The music video shows this in a really interesting way. We have each member in a different location – a living room/studio, a desert (holding an umbrella), a car under a streetlight, in a bunch of plants, and a telephone box. A girl shows up in a few of them, always sort of shrugged off or ignored by the member she’s interacting with. And the whole visual is dark and shadowy.
But right after Han sings that last line in the bridge, it breaks and the blue/black is replaced with yellow light. It’s much brighter. Still a little gloomy. Still fitting the rest of the aesthetic, but visually a clear marker of the change.
Now, the M/V making video does show Han filming parts, but none of them ended up in the actual video. I’m not sure if that was due to contracts or negotiations, but they did feature some of his parts in the teasers. And either way, I think it’s great that Han got to spend time with them on set and participate in that way as well.
Overall, again, the song suits Han’s style so well. I feel like a broken record talking about how Han takes such simple stories and experiences and makes them so beautiful – or beautifully heartbreaking.
And it showcases Han’s range as a performer. His verse and lines in the bridge have both his amazing vocals and his rap skills. I truly realized how much of a chameleon Han is with this song. He matches Dohun’s vocal style so well that it’s almost hard to distinguish when he’s singing. The last line he sings in the bridge – “Oh, girl, don’t make me love you” – is a prime example.
I noted this with his OST song “Let It Show,” too. His tone and vocal quality is so different in that song, because he was matching the vibe of a romance drama. This is song is much grungier rock. “back to life” leans more into hard rock. “Raining Stars” is more poppy. He has such a range that he can suit pretty much any genre. He could probably do opera or mariachi and fit them perfectly. There’s a reason he’s called an all-rounder, the ace of the 4th generation.
Of course, he still has a distinct tone. The way he pronounces certain English words or emphasizes syllables is all him. But we’ve really seen his range this year in pretty much every way. Writing. Composing. Dancing. Singing. Content. And I can’t wait to see him continue to flourish.
